Work-in-Progress Things

Here's a starting point for us to look at our "things" as a whole and to think about grouping as Lindsey suggested. PLEASE feel free to add, remove, edit, shift, etc. This is just an attempt at organizing what's been brainstormed so far. :)

  • Twitter (microblogging)(*)
  • Podcasting/Vodcasting
    • miro (downloadable aggregator-lots of hd video feeds)
    • Juice (downloadable aggregator)
    • itunes (downloadable aggregator)

  1. While Youtube is the most well-known video-sharing site, I think it should be contained in its own category called Video. There are a number of great sites for not only sharing video (Metacafe, Vimeo,Dailymotion) but also just watching commercial stuff like Hulu. Plus, there's free online editors that could be included although I don't think any of them are as full-featured as Sumopaint is for still images.

  2. Another thing is Music Production/Creation versus listening. This might be something better left for later, but there is a Flash-based production environment that contains emulations of Roland hardware called NoxTools Audiotool.

Plus, there's free sound editors like Audacity.

  3. We should include Flickr search utilities just like Learn & Play did. Another cool one I just discovered via Download Squad is liteFlick.

  5. Aaron brought it to my attention that you all didn't have editing capabilities. Sorry about that! You should be good to go now.

  6. Thanks for starting to get us organized, Katie! How about we put Facebook in a category of "Social Networks" or something similar and include MySpace and Linkedin?

  7. I like the idea of grouping things! And I agree with Julie about Facebook - should be in a "social networking" category with MySpace and Linkedin. There are other social networks too (Orkut, Friendster, etc.) but I think for our purposes, picking the top 3 sites for each category may be the best way to go. The same with YouTube, as Aaron suggested - it's the big one, but to be consistent, we should include sites like Vimeo and Hulu as well.

  8. Also, I don't think we should include limewire in the music category. Sure, it CAN be used legally - but mostly it's used for illegally downloading copyrighted music. As a system, we have decided not to help customers with sites like limewire because of the copyright issues involved, so putting it on our list here might not be the best idea.

  9. Erica,

That's partially why I think a site like LegalTorrents might be a good thing to mention as a P2P solution. Sure, it might lead more people to take advantage of illegal filesharing, but it will also promote more tech literacy.

  10. I have yet to find a podcast/vodcast aggregator that works even half as well as the downloadable varieties.

  11. hmmm...maybe I spoke too soon. It seems like Mediafly has enough amenities to satisfy most folks. So far, it hasn't done a very good job handling video feeds that I input, but the default catalog is good, and the interface isn't terrible (still not as nice as itunes, miro, etc...). PodNova is okay, but after some cursory use, its not on the same level as Mediafly IMO.

  12. I think we should include Type Pad to our blog list.

  13. I'm adding Slideshare to Videos even though its not technically a video-hosting site.
